Neither Sveta nor Alexey can put an end to the chain of mysterious events surrounding them — a plane explosion, the kidnapping of Alexey’s sister, and the poisoning of horses. The police begin to suspect everyone who has ever visited the estate or worked for its hospitable owner. A letter secretly delivered to Alexey sheds no light on the situation — the kidnapper demands no ransom for Katya.
